The photo above is taken in Auschwitz I, between the two barbed wire fences separating the SS and the Gestapo from all the prisoners there.
Tadeusz Sobolewicz, a survivor of Auschwitz having been in concentation camps for 4 years, remembers that upon his arrival in Auschwitz, the camp supervisor made the following statement:
'You are now in a German concentration camp where discipline, subordination and order are obligatory. All prisoners must work. He who does not work for the good of the German nation must die, the sooner the better. [...] All Jews in this group shall live for no longer than two weeks; all priests, one month; and the rest of you, three months. After that there is only one way out: through the chimney. Anyone who does not like what I have just said may now leave the ranks or voluntarily throw himself onto the wires - that too is a way out.'
The phrase 'through the chimney' materialised for thousands of people and Sobolewicz's own parents.
He states that his survival was purely due to a series of 'lucky events'.
If you find his book ('But I survived' read it, it will give you a much better idea of what went on there, rather than by you visiting the place.
